THE BIG FAT HISTOGRAM LIE
"Photography is about more than just pulling focus... it’s about pulling rank too"

RATING OR RANTING?
Here's a blog I posted just after joining the site. Then Marthinus went and removed the rating facility and it sat there under my blogs with no relevence at all. So I unpublished it. but now that the site again invites photographers to rate the work of their peers, perhaps its relevence returns?

WALKING THE MOUNTAIN WHITE
These mountains, the Ukhalhamba (Drakensberg), loom large in the spirit of those who know them. Something about them - their aloof grandeur, an austere mystery - works into the crevasses of your soul.

TEACHING TEENAGERS TO FLYFISH.

The notion that teenagers can be taught to fly-fish, or anything else for that matter, is entirely
absurd; they already know everything. - The Unpublished Epigrams of Surly, the Ghillie

OUR FOOLISH HEARTS

On an overcast and windless autumn day I sit at my desk and through wide windows watch trout rings dimpling across the surface of the lake. A hatch of termites is on the wing.

It is said that the devil is in the detail - and that the detail is everywhere. Perhaps that is true, but then, with equal certainty, so too are the delights.

NEVER MIND DE VIDTH... FEEL DE KVALITY!
Hell, Marthinus, see what you have done now!
I was just building up a good head of steam to pick up where I had left off of my dissertation on RATING...
and you went and turned the damn rating bar off, in so doing, solving the conundrum of it all beyond any dispute. Well what the hell... those were my principles, but if you don’t like them, I’ve got others.
The issue is not so much that rating has any unimpeachable value in itself, but the fact that it provides a scale (subjective as all hell as it may be) of QUALITY .

CLOSE-UP & PERSONAL
A couple of members have asked me what all that macro work on aquatic macro invertebrates is about. I tell’m it beats the hell out of working for a living. They look at me weird like they think I’m funny. But there is method to the madness.
It just so happens that in their Sept/Oct issue, SA FLYFISHING ran a feature on macro-photography by Dr Neil Hodges, and it just so happens that I was asked to contribute some pics and a sound byte. To save on repetition, I am posting my contribution to the forum. The first part was in the nature of an informal note... but he published it anyway, though I never intended it, so what the hell.....
